SUPPORTING young CLIENTS seeking pregnancy referrals

Description

In this 2-hour interactive training, participants will consider the challenges young clients face when seeking care for an unintended pregnancy, including provider bias, environmental barriers, and lack of provider training. Participants will learn how these challenges are made more complicated when a client holds additional marginalized identities. Participants will gain knowledge to apply best practices in serving young clients who are seeking care for unintended pregnancy.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe at least one factor that may impact a young person’s ability to access reproductive healthcare
  • Explain at least two best practices in supporting young individuals in accessing reproductive healthcare
  • State at least one intended practice change in referring young individuals to abortion services
  • Identify judicial bypass, abortion funds, and Provide’s Referral Tool as tools that can support their work with young people seeking abortion

“One of our counselors worked directly with a client to connect her to an abortion clinic. There was some concern about how far along she was and how she’d pay for the procedure, and whether the pregnancy was the result of an assault or her consensual partner. We talked about getting a DNA test, and talked with the courts about that (they’re super expensive!). We worked with her for a couple of weeks while she decided what to do, and once she got the DNA test she wanted the abortion, so we were able to coordinate some financial support for her as well.”
